Here’s a secret: I’d love to grow my own coffee one day.
Coffee is joy, energy, and warmth. It’s humble and sophisticated.
It can cost anywhere between $0.89 and $7. And a coffee machine, between $19 and $33,760.
It’s how most people meet for the first time. Over coffee.
P.S. Simon Sinek would be proud of Mattia Cella.

A coffee bean is actually a seed.
Once dried, roasted, and ground, it’s then used to brew coffee.
If the seed isn’t processed, it can be planted and grown into a coffee tree.
I learned it while touring a coffee plantation in Ubud, Bali.
I used this website as a guide. Super cool and clear blog. Check them out!

-
Once the seeds are hearty enough, that is. When ready, they are planted.
This usually happens in the wet season, so the soil stays wet.
-
It takes up to 4 years for a tree to produce the cherries.
Wait, cherries?
Yes! That’s what “beans” are called in this initial phase, which is when they turn reddish.
Once ready, cherries are harvested.
-
Once picked, processing should begin as quickly as possible to prevent spoilage.
“Processing” means letting the cherries dry.
This happens by laying them under the sun and turning them during the day.
-
Before being exported, beans are milled.
In very simple terms, this means that. the ”skin” of the beans is removed.
In this phase, beans are called green cofffee.
-
Beans are shipped.
How?
In jute or sisal bags loaded in shipping containers, or bulk-shipped inside plastic-lined containers.
Before being roasted, it is tested.

Roasting turns green coffee into brown beans.
Read how this website beautifully puts it:
When they reach an internal temperature of about 400 degrees Fahrenheit, they begin to turn brown and the caffeol, a fragrant oil locked inside the beans, begins to emerge.
-
The (now brown) beans are grinded and brewed.
Enjoy your cup.

8 AM.
We’ve all bean there.
That first sip feeling.
Fill up my Mr Coffee with water.
Apply filter.
4 scoops of coffee (not associated with TJ).
Brew.
1:30 PM.
Second & Last.
I never go over two cups per day, and not after 2:30 PM.
Fun fact: in Italy, waiters will always ask if you want coffee after dinner: “How many espressos?"
As much as I love coffee, you’ll never see my hand raise.

COFFEESHOPS, OF COURSE.
My top three ↓
Ubud Coffee Roastery.
I had my best espresso ever in this place. Just perfect. I had to buy a coffee bad to bring home.
I already finished it by the time I took the picture.
Frame Coffee.
Their cappuccino is on another level. Come say hi on Saturday mornings if you are in NYC!
Best people as well.
Volcán Atitlán.
Okay. Not exactly a coffeeshop…. but certainly a cup I will never forget.
About to see an active volcano erupt.
Now. What you were probably waiting for.
This “cat” eats coffee cherries, which are then handled to roast coffee. Surprisingly, it doesn’t taste like s**t.
I’m afraid you reached the end (bummer), but before you go:
Let’s grab a cup.
